after a weekend of troubleshooting, i've determined that my fs-100 and hvx200 are not the problem but that the supplied firewire cable from firestore is no good. a cheap replacement cable seemed to make it work fine. now i'm searching for a real replacement cable. does anyone know of a sturdy 6 to 4 pin firewire cable that has 90 degree connectors on one or both ends?

Garnite Digital makes a very solid cable with built in ferrite cores and an led to tell you when it has signal. Pricey but way more solid than anything else I've seen.
