Firestor fs-100?

Will a fs-100 work with a DVX100b? I was thinking of getting one untill I can upgrade to a HVX. Or if I went the Canon A1 rout, would it work with that? Sorry, but all the info I see about it always only mentions the HVX200 and nothing else.

The FS-100 would work with a DVX, yes. It would partially work with the Canon A1, in that it would record DV but it wouldn't record any HD from the Canon.

Quite expensive way to go though; the firestore for the DVX is maybe $700, vs. around $1800 for the HVX's firestore, so... you might find it less expensive to get a regular FS-4 for the DVX, and then sell it on ebay when you decide to upgrade?

I take it this is because the FS-100 only recognizes the DVCPROHD and not Canon's version of HD?

There is a special version of the FireStore for the HVX, yes, it's the FS-100.

Other versions of the FS record DV, and at least some will also recognize HDV. But even then there's some confusion over whether they'll record Canon's 24F... maybe that's rectified now? I know Jay Rodriguez here on the forum went through some frustration trying to use an FS-4 with an XHA1. But that was six or seven months ago or so, so maybe it's all cleared up now?

Basically there's DV, HDV, and DVCPRO-HD. The FS-4 does DV and only DV. The FS-4 HD does DV and HDV, but I don't think it handles Canon 24F. Then there's the FS-C, which is designed to work with Canon camcorders and handles DV and HDV, and with the right firmware it'll record the 24F of the XHA1 as well.

Finally there's the FS-100, which does DV, DVCPRO, DVCPRO50, and DVCPRO-HD. It's suitable for the HVX200 and HPX500 and HPX2000/3000 and HDX900. A DV-only camera could use it, but it'd be kind of a waste since all the additional capability wouldn't be used, so if you're shooting only DV you might look at an FS-4.

The FS-C and FS-4 HD can record HDV, but not DVCPRO-HD. The FS-100 can record DVCPRO-HD but not HDV. All of them also record DV.
