Firefox web browser

Re: Firefox web browser

Ive been using it for a month or so now on my PC and it seems ok. Doesn't get kicked around so much by the scripts that seem to target explorer. Tis a little slower starting up but only by micro seconds. I'll use anything that helps the smaller guys give the Gates monopoly a run for it's money. Just like there are a ton of different cars on the roads so it should be with OS and web navigators. The e-mail program "Thunderbird" is cool too and one more nail in the coffin of the gates monopoly.

Re: Firefox web browser

Haha, yeah ole Billy's stuff is basically one big security hole after another, patched like the knees of a little boy's blue jeans.

Re: Firefox web browser

Yeh I think if we spread it out a little, make it harder for hackers to target one specific app then just maybe the web will be a safer place to surf.

Re: Firefox web browser

Hey thanks for the tip, it zips along quite nicely. One thing I have noticed that's a bummer is that if you hit the back button when browsing posts, it still shows the thread to be unread even thought you have just read it. You need to hit the refresh button everytime unlike IE.

Re: Firefox web browser

The thing I don't like about it is that it makes my MMB (the scrolling button on my mouse) super sensitive.

Re: Firefox web browser

I think for first release it's working well, i remember a few glitches in explorers first time out. I say give it a little time and all will be well!

Re: Firefox web browser

If I give this a shot do I do anything other than download? Or will Explorer be lost forever?

Re: Firefox web browser

I have both running on my pc john, both work as good as gold...No grief

Re: Firefox web browser

No John, it doesn't affect IE at all. Just set Firefox as your default browswer and you will never see IE again...Ahhhhahahahahahahahahah!

Ahem, sorry. If you want to change IE back to your default browser you can check yourself into the local mental clinic....no, wait, oh yeah, go to internet options in IE and choose to make it the default browser again.

Re: Firefox web browser

I like the option of searching such a variety of sites straight from the little box in the corner.

Re: Firefox web browser

Using firefox for a while.
Just great.
But you have to keep another browser because some web sites are running correctly only with IE.

John, you can use this "foxy" theme to keep the look'n feel of IE :

;)

Personally, i prefer the charamel theme but the update for 1.0 is not yet available.

Re: Firefox web browser

I've been running it for a while now and highly prefer it over IE. The tabbed browsing is one of the best features. Follow that with the popup blocker and robustness.

Note, that some sites such as Trigger Street require IE. Load of B.S. but what can you do?

Don't gorget to check out the Extensions and Themes available on the Mozilla site. Lots of nice stuff.

Oh, there's one problem that I haven't figured a workaround for. When Firefox is your default browser, clicking a web page link from the XP desktop or various other locations outside of Firefox, will cause two instances of Firefox to be started. I just close one right when it appears and let the other load. But, it's still a pain.

if you hit the back button when browsing posts, it still shows the thread to be unread

disjecta - That might be a problem with the YaBB html code. It it doesn't set specific values in the head section then indicate when the page expires then the browser will cache it. So, FIrefox might be doing the correct thing while IE isn't.

Go into preferences and under the Browsing tab, see if "Use Autoscrolling" or "Use Smooth Scrolling" helps at all.

Also in preferences, under "Tabbed Browsing," see if any of the "Open links from other applications" options help with the new instances issue. (I'm sure any quirks that surface will be taken care of by the highly capable open source community.)

Oh yeah, one of my favorite Firefox features: Preferences/Accessibility/Begin Finding When You Begin Typing. :D

Out of fairness, it looks like IE can be outfitted with some of Firefox's coolness: http://windowsmarketplace.com/content.aspx?ctId=63

Re: Firefox web browser

Hans. TS works fine for me, but there are other sites that don't work as well, like Done Deal's chat room, or most chat rooms for that matter. Firefox rules!

Just curious, I've had mine for just over a month, can I presume it's the latest version? Any way of checking, I tried the site, still can't tell if I nailed the latest.

Click the Help->About menu item and the version is listed in the dialog. Also, in Tools->Options->Advanced you can have it check for updates (manually and autmatically).

Re: Firefox web browser

Definitely love Firefox. Very cool app with some cool plugins. Right now I can check the weather via my nav bar :D!

Re: Firefox web browser

Firefox is a really good browser, but don't forget that some ignorant web developers create web sites that work only with IE. Especially when you are trying to view anything that involves Microsoft products.

If for some reason, you are unable to view clip streaming in windows media, then just change to IE, it will work.
