Firefox commercials

Hey guys, here's two commercials my company just did for Firefox on the HVX200.

The first one is "Smells Terrific", written, shot, and directed by yours truly.

The second one is "Easy", written and directed by my partner Jesse Vigil, shot by me.

(This one still has pretty rough CC, which I'll try to fix in the next couple of days)

Both were shot HVX200 720p and then downconverted with center crop for SD. My first experience doing pan-and-scan, actually! Hope you enjoy.

Doug. Commercials look good. Liked your site a lot too. Great demo reel.. but man, I almost cried laughing at that bareback mountain spoof. Dude, that is some funny funny stuff. You should post a link here and let all enjoy. That's the funniest spoof I've seen on the movie.. which needs to be spoofed as much as possible.

My wife thinks it's been done too much and she's not too excited about my spoof idea, but I'm gonna do one anyway. Mine will be brokeback elevator about a couple of business suit guys who go in... have some smores, a campfire, forbidden sex.. all in ten glorious floors of excitment...

Especially love the silhouettes... Funny stuff bro! Where did you get the music from? I'll need to grab this too for my stupid crap idea.

I really liked the concept in yours. I think the directing though was a bit off. The casting was a bit too generic (thus you missed oportunity to get extra laughs based on the characters of cooworkers) -- i'm saying it only because he concept was so cool you almost have a winner.

I'll admit the boss should have been older. We put together the whole thing with less than a day of pre-production, including casting, so that's why. The boss is actually played by a good friend of mine.

I'm not sure I follow your comments, though, Patryk. The commercial is already at breakneck pace to fit in :30, there's not really time for any other characterization, and I think that it would just be distracting. You can only ask so much from an audience in that span of time. The casting may have been rushed but I'm very happy with the performances the actors put in. But that's cool if you disagree.

Now, I'm pretty damn sick of Brokeback parodies, but that sounds like it could be pretty damn funny! Get that made! As for Bareback Mountain, we didn't actually come up with that ourselves. The Thach Brothers wrote and shot it, we did all the post work and hosting. Now we're working closely with them to develop new shows and concepts.

Thanks guys for checking it out.

Thanks John, glad you liked them.

Sorry about the sound on "Easy", I've spent hours trying to improve it and, well, I'm not really a sound editor. I think the whole thing will have to be ADR'd later.

I liked the first video a lot. Very amusing and tight. I thought it was a real commercial.

The second...not so much. The first time I saw it I didn't understand it, and I had no idea what that green thing on the plate was. I watched the video a second time and realized it was a play on Dr. Seuss (I think?) with green eggs and ham. But even then, I didn't understand it. And the audio was pretty bad too.

Liked the first one, and not so much the second one (for the same reasons that nedelman is giving).

The boss could be older, but I've had a few bosses through the years as young as the guy in the first vid.

Good comments. Like I mentioned a few posts up, I'm trying to get the director to ADR the whole thing. Apparently the boom mic was sending a bad signal, so half of what you hear in there is just from tracks 3 and 4. It's bad.

Your cinematography was amazing. It looked like it was shot on 35mm,
the pacing and tone of the spot was good too.

But I feel the concept is not very strong. The casting is too young... overall, it feels like you casted your friends.

The spot doesnt leverage enough of what Firefox has to offer or its advantages over any other web browser. It also doesnt show me anything new or makes me think about the product in a new or original way. The fact that it "smells" good is really way off course. And its not even funny. If you commented on things that had a visual reference, than it would makes sense because Firefox is all about visual interface customization.

In the end, it feels like a spec. And ulitmately a good spec shoudnt't, it should feel like a great spot you saw on TV.
