Firefighter Training Films...

Hi...
I've been gone for a while and was unable to check into this until today.

I followed the instructions and it looks like the file extensions are either... MOI, or MOD. Does that seem correct?

Any additional thoughts, or suggestions?

I'll try to check in again later this morning.

Thanks in advance.

rename your files to .mpg instead of .mod or .moi Then try and play them in media player - should play just fine. Not sure if windows movie maker will handle them though. The JVCs record mpeg2 streams and for some reason dont name them as such.

Just tried that, but got this error message:

The file..... MOV001.mpg cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.

Why does this seem to be so difficult (aside from my lack of knowledge lol)...?

Sorry to report that I tried the 'mpeg' extension and still got the error message similar to the above.

I'm starting to think I'm going to have to spring for the Vegas software out of pocket. Does anyone know... for certain... that such a purchase will solve my problems? :(

Just wondering...

Just for the heck of it, try renaming them to .m2t and playing them in VLC

Hummm... Tried the .m2t extension and it failed to work as well. This was the error message: MOV001-MOD.m2t is not a supported file type, and it cannot be imported into Windows Movie Maker.

But... I'm not sure what... VLC... is.:embarasse

I'm really new to all of this.

can you play any mpg files? maybe post a short one and lets see if we can help you out with a proper codec.

Not sure how I would 'post' one of the video files.

I really wish I knew more (had previous experience).

Is there a spot somewhere online that a sample file could be posted. Like a test video, or something?

That is an interesting link!
I'm going to download the VLC software now.

Thanks.... I'll post here again when I see how things work with it.

I suppose that this... "It supports a large number of multimedia formats, without the need for additional codecs"... is central to my problem... or possibly a key to the solution. I hope this works.:)

In the meantime... please feel free to suggest anything else that might help me get going in a positive direction with this project. Everyone (at the station) keeps bugging me... asking... "When are you going to get them finished?!"

Ah well.... thanks for all the help so far. It is much appreciated.

You should try watching the .mod with VLC too. I should clarify that while VLC will likely play your file, it won't allow you to import it into WMM. You'll still need to convert it to a file type that windows recognizes. VLC can do this, but it's kind of a pain. If you get that point, this place is definitely the place to look.

edit:
stupid typos.

Wow...
So far... I'm making progress!:)

The VLC media player does seem to play the files... but... only when I change the extension to mpg, mpeg, or m2t. It does not seem to be able to do anything with the moi, or mod extensions.

Now... how will I progress so that I can 'edit' them... into actual 'training segments', or 'films'?

hey, firefighter i just want to say i've always respected you guys for the courage, and physical capabilities you possess but i got to tell you i have a lot of respect for your memorization, mathimatical and word comprehension skills. i took the test in maui, hi. and the first part of the test was remembering 4 pages of what this guy said and then referring back to the questions afterwards......well needless to say half the class threw their pencils in the air and i threw mine at the instructor!(jk) man forget this sh it! i went back to bussing tables at denny's.

Ya know, the software that came with your camera should be able to output to .avi

Does that mean that I should try to change the extension name to 'avi'?

Also... jake_carpenter, jdajda, Raptor365 and kimko... thanks for your posts.:)
