Finishing HD to VHS or DVD

Hi everyone,

okay assume you shoot on HD and you want to finish on video. You've got two choices - DVD, or VHS, for those who don't have DVD players.

Questions:

1. If you finish to DVD, will the DVD when projected recognise or display the picture as an HD image, or do you need to "tell" your editing program or DVD making software to it convert to HD before exporting?

2. If you finish your HD project to VHS for home viewing, how does it look??? I've shot on SD miniDV and transferred that to VHS and it looks pretty crap. How does an HD image hold up once it's transferred to VHS? Would the VHS tape recognise that it was shot in 1080i etc?

Thanks,
David

OK, I'll make this brief.

VHS = Crap. Stop. Don't do it. If they don't have a DVD player, purchase one for them for a whopping $20.

DVD = Good. For SD, export your final from your NLE as uncompressed or as it's native format (DVCPROHD or whatever) Then tell your DVD encoder that it's a 16x9 file. It will playback with the proper aspect on most 16:9 TVs. For HD, you're getting into Blu-Ray territory, and you'll need expensive burners, discs, players, and advice form someone else cause I don't know much abotu burnin them.

Your DVD player isnt going to play HD unless you have authored to a Blu-ray or HD DVD and I'm not sure about that process. They're expensive. Also, your DVD player won't actually play a high definition format unless you have a HD DVD player or a Blu-ray player.

And you VCR DEFINITELY won't be able to recognize that the file was 1080. VCRs are "old technology" nowadays and VHS tapes are only standard def.

ditto, to all

no way someone would do all the work and cost of HD studio and try and go back to VHS (WONT HAPPEN)

rc444, u probably have some reasons for asking these questions but basically when producing video to DVD, its all a process that ends with 16:9 or 4:3 in the final product.

if i want a DVD to look 16:9, i shoot in 16:9, capture in my editing 16:9 and render / encode final product in 16:9.

lots have solutions for anamorphic type conversion, but i believe to start production with a plan and follow through.
