finished quality of video question.

I just finished my first project in v5.0 and previewed the avi file after the final render. what I was wondering is you can see some jagged lines and artifacts on the video even with de-interlace checked. The original quality was good(dvx100a) but I am shooting in 60i. I did notice in the render-as box, there is a box you can check that says interleave every frame. The interleave every.25 seconds is set as default. Is there some settings I am not using correctly? Is there any settings that anyone can recommend. I just feel I should have better looking video and hope it's nothing I am doing wrong.
Also should I try to shoot in 30p? I do weddings and stuff.

what does interleave mean. there is no info in the help file on this setting.
my final output is dvd

thanks

Re: finished quality of video question.

If you're shooting in 60i, you don't want to de-interlace. You'll lose half your resolution (and produce artificacts, etc., as you've noticed).

Re: finished quality of video question.

If I were you, I'd stay away from interlacing altogether. 30p is a much better bet than 60i. Experiment first and see if you like it. But all the jaggies and similar artifacts that are inherent in interlaced footage are not such a problem in progressive.

Re: finished quality of video question.

If you are shooting 60i, like david said, you should use the default template, dvntsc 29.976fps lower field first. Since it is a wedding I doubt you can do it again, but like disjecta says, 60i just doesn't cut it anymore. Since I have bought my dvx100a I have not put a single second to tape in 60i, just not interested. Progressive is where it is at, Unless you are shooting for slow motion, but that is another whole topic, isn't it. ;)

Re: finished quality of video question.

what is the problem with progressive and slow motion? about half of my wedding videos are slowed down and set to music. I usually set slo-mo to about 60-70% depending on the feel. If I shoot 30p will this be a problem. I have seen other wedding videos where the picture is so clear and no artifacts in it that I wonder what I am doing wrong.
I output my first dvd from dvda-2 wed. and it turned out pretty good but the menu kinda jitters a little. any advise on this. I am totally new to dvda-2 and don,t know how to set it up. I take alot of pride in my work and little things really bug me. If 1 picture doesn't look right i will fix it and re-render. Thanks everyone for the posts.

Re: finished quality of video question.

30p and slow motion will work fine, but if you want slower smoother motion, (at the cost of image quality) only 60i will give it to you.  Where your working at 60-70%, 30p should be fine.

Re: finished quality of video question.

What if you were to do 50% shooting 30p. I guess I need to test it out. What is the difference, does 30p look a little jerky or something?

The problem is that for effective slow motion, you want to capture lots of temporal motion information. Progressive means less temporal resolution (more spatial, but less temporal). In other (better) words, progressive captures motion only 30 times a second, interlace captures motion sixty times a second. Sixty motion samples give you better slow-motion than 30 do.

I usually set slo-mo to about 60-70% depending on the feel. I have seen other wedding videos where the picture is so clear and no artifacts in it that I wonder what I am doing wrong.
What you're doing wrong is slowing down to 60-70%. You should be slowing down to 50%. For quality slow motion, you have to work in discrete intervals of the capture rate, so 50% and 25% will be smooth, 60% and 70% will not be smooth.

Try shooting interlace, editing in a 60i timeline, and set some of your clips to play back at 50% rate. You'll probably be very happy with how smooth the slow motion is.

Re: finished quality of video question.

What about 75%. 50% is to slow isn't it? What is vegas 5.0 native timeline set to. I have not changed that at all.
I will try the 50% and see what happens.

Berry, did you rear my post a few up about the dvd menu concern. How good do you know dvda-2. I think I will start another thread about this so other people can see it in case other people have this concern.

thank you again

Re: finished quality of video question.

Never used DVDA-2. Haven't upgraded yet.

As far as 50% - 75%, and whether it's too slow... you asked about smoothness. 50% will be smooth. 75% won't. It's just the way things work -- at 50% you're making one frame out of one field, no guesswork, no jumpiness, just glass-smooth slow motion. At 75% you're interpolating and combining odd fields and whatever -- it just isn't smooth. I don't make the rules, I'm just reporting 'em. 50% is smooth, as smooth as any slow-mo from any video camera is ever gonna be (excepting 30P imported into a 24P timeline, of course).

Re: finished quality of video question.

thanks Berry. I will try 50% and see what happens. It make sense now that you explained it that way. Thanks for all your help.
