Finding distributor for documentary

Hi
Not saying it's easy, but wondering how to go about getting a distributor for a doc.

Is getting noticed at festivals the usual way? Whatever way, you'd think having an agent is needed.

That's about all I know about it now.

Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

Festivals can't hurt. I'd say go to a retailer that sells docs (if there still are any), or a library, and look over the packaging. Note which distributors are handling high profile documentaries, then send them yours along with a congenial cover letter.

We've had three films distributed without an agent, so it's not mandatory.

Thanks much for your reply!

Ah, at first I wasn't sure what you meant, but you mean go to a library, look over the dvd cases and see who's distributing them? Will do! Thx!

Correct. Also, keep an eye on the docs that make it to TV channels, like History, Documentary, etc. If the distributor is not listed in the credits, look them up on IMDB.
