Finding 1 ¼ inch pipe in the UK?

I’m looking for somewhere to buy Speedrail, 1 ¼ inch scheduled 40 aluminium pipe here in the UK or if not the EU. It’s been a struggle and as of yet I’ve had no success, it’s not something that the usual metal suppliers have in stock and I don’t know what the cost of ordering from the US will be but I doubt it’s pretty.

Has anyone sourced any of this pipe here in the UK or know of somewhere they think I could try?

Do you know the actual size?

'pipe' is an internal dimension to calulate liquid flow.. 1 1/4 pipe may be 1.5in OD ?

Rod and tube are externally dimensioned.

check you know that then move forward.

Or consider going 48mmOD like the rest of the industry (?)

Hi, yes I know the sizes and I’ve thought of stepping up to only the 48mm but for a rail dolly it’s a lot of unnecessary extra weight and bulk to carry about. It can work on 48mm if needed but that would not be the first choice.

Aluminium Wharehouse list 40mm and 1-5/8.

Overall id be shy of going away from doughty or key clamp sizes

I hear a grip say they wasted a lot of money like this.

I "get" that 48 is a bit fat- but dolly wise it is not that rigid either

I've built one inch dolly and 48mm both flex

As some of you found the closest here in the UK is 1, 5/8ths 10 gauge, in metric that’s 41.3Omm OD and 34.8mm ID with the 1, ¼ scheduled 40 pipe being 42.2mm OD and 35mm ID. Give or take about .5mm on OD and wall thickness.

This might seem close to sit a dolly on top but it depends on how the dolly is designed and for fittings 1mm out is a mile out.

I’m not sure what you mean Morgan. Do you mean with non standard tube sizing and buying specific clamps and fittings?

If you are on 150 or mitchell then the dolly will work just fine on 48mm but for medium sized camera packages, so around the 100mm bowl then some lighter rails is a good idea. In the US they are not going away from from standard fittings, 1 ,1/4 is a standard. It’s just here in the UK that we don’t seem to use anything lighter than the 48mm.

Yep I'm talking uk standards for gripping which seem to revolve around three things..

-stage scaffolding (48mm)
-key Clamp - some smaller sizes
- the doughry catalogue

I'm not saying 1-1/4 is bad - indeed as I grip fs7 and smaller it feels "right"

But if you interact within the Industry then going outside these "standards" tends to cause trouble

well no. It says the O.D. is 1.66" which is 42.164mm

The problem with finding a metric equivalent is that with a rail system you probably need both the ID and OD to match and I rather doubt that metric pipe is using US pipe schedules so...

I would consider finding a close equivalent that is common in the EU and swapping all the pipe sections out. Probably cheaper than trying to ship pipe across the Atlantic.
