Find To Get Locations?

Hey there,

I'm shooting a short very soon. It's my first and although everything is coming together quite nicely, I have trouble finding locations. I need an apartment, a house, and a cafe/restuarant. Where do I find people to offer me these locations to shoot in? I'll pay if I have to, but preferably not too much.

Go to your film commision's office. If it is anything like the one here in LA, you can get a ton of info for free. You can even scout locations online by registering...again for free. There are pics and contact info for each location. Good luck

man its all about Connections
i just shot my short , on the road in a house in a resturaunt the house was a buddies friends house said we could use it, the resturaunt was owned by a guy i did a video for a few months ago, he had no problem with it, ask around, get the word out, Create a buzz that a film is being shot and youll begin to see some oppurtunities
and ask....hit up all the Resturaunts and ask to talk with the owners, youd be suprised, who knows one of them might be a huge movie buff and would love it.
if not all they can say is no....
hit the streets yo!

Yeah, I need to go scouting for a good few solid locations for a music video I'll be directing soon. So someone gave me that link in another messageboard so I thought I would post it for you.

Good luck!

What do you mean for the message board? I'll just send you the link in a PM, if you want.

oh no throoper don't worry about it. I got my password from OFC and thanks man the site is a god sent. You have much experience using it? Am I expected to pay the property owners for using their locations?

well for the goodness of the general public, I'm gonna answer myself. property owners ask for quite alot of money for using their locations... the film board told me to be prepared to shell $500 to $5000 per day... and after some research myself they are unfortunately correct...

Yes,

My question is how do you shoot a low budget feature when you cannot afford liability insurance?

I wanted to shoot in our local movie theatre but at the last minute they wanted a copy of our insurance. Insurance?

Who can afford that?

Chris

Locations - What a Royal Pain

Locations - What a Royal Pain

This was the sore topic of my preproduction. It's the one thing that kept me up at night and miserable between shoot days.

Your local film commission offers its services for free, so it's worth checking out. But be prepared for the reality: they will largely feature locations within the union limits of the city, and those locations are expecting a sizeable daily fee for the use of their site. You'll learn that another movie crew was just there the week before (great) so hand over the $1000 a day and you're welcomed too (not so great).

If it's a commercial location, you can sometimes find places thrilled to let you film there IF they are new and trying to develop some cheap publicity. But, at a minimum, they will want some kind of payment for necessary staff (security, bartenders, etc.), and really that's not unreasable. Everything is negotiable though, so be prepared to do so.

Really the best locations are either from people you know (friends) who are thrilled to let you use their place in exchange for a credit and DVD/film copy, or places that you can rent outright and have 100% control over. We gave them $10 a day for rehearsal use, $25 a day for filming, just as a courtesy (some even said no, but we did anyway; "it's the classy move").

Location Directors are also scarce -- even the number of good professional ones available to Hollywood is dwindling! But, if you can find someone who's got an outgoing personality, makes friends easily, and gets around town, seems to know everyone, it would be worth it to even PAY them for their services to help you secure locations. It will save you a LOT of headaches, so it's worth every penny.

Good luck!

for my current project, I'm stuck with my own apartment and my mother's house... thank god my mom goes fishing every Sunday and my roommate can go stay with her boyfriend's.

On the other hand, I was very fortunate to have a very nice food cafe where the owner is essentially letting me shoot there for no extra cost. In exchange I voluntarily agreed to feed my cast and crew with his food and give the place a credit, which really isnt much.
