Finally got around to getting FCS2 installed and.....

Was like &^#+, compressor wouldnt export single batches. Motion was driving me crazy then I let my brain do the walking and did a software update.

Hows everyone else finding it? Running through everything this feels like FCS on steroids to me. The retiming function in Motion is excellent - no need for twixtor anymore and it does the job faster. I did have a couple of tiny issues first run through - but these could be tweaked.

Now I am happy I got that extra ram in the mac pro.

Since the software update was released I haven't had any issued with FCS2. Been using FCP, Motion, and Compressor mostly. Color for a few things here and there and DVDSP occasionally. I don't think I've had the opportunity yet to really do anything with Soundtrack Pro except open and say "Yep, that's Soundtrack Pro." Though the Auto Conform features look amazing.

I'm finding it fantastic - except for Compressor.
What the hell did they do to that interface?

I know I"m going to feel stupid for posting this but - am I the only one who gets no progress bar here when compressing something?
I hit submit...and nothing... my comptuer whirrs away and eventually it's done...but compressor never tells me when something is finished compressing or how long it's going to take while its doing it.

What am I missing?

Go into the Compressor preferences, and check the box that says "Auto lannch Batch Monitor". In previous versions, Compressor did that by default. Not sure why that has changed.

WHEW - thank you MacWorm.
I knew it had to be something easy like that - just hadn't gotten around to looking into it.

Just did exactlty as you said and everythign is lookin good now.

When I do a ram preview in motion you can see it progress in the mini timeline however the progress bar that comes up does nothing. It's working fine but thats a little odd.

I wouldnt upgrade mid project if thats what your asking. But if you do have a project thats finished and still on your drives I think it would be OK. I have an ongoing project thats incomplete so I just went ahead. Just said do you want to update project to current version I chose yes and it was fine.

I've been using FCS 2 for a while and like most of it ... my only problem is still Motion ... from the start this felt like beta software to me and it still does. I can crash this thing literally in seconds. Too bad really because I really like some of the features and would love to use them ... Maybe it's just the old G5 not being Intel enough ... :(

Out of curiosity, could any of you tell me which type of Mac hardware you are running FCP 2 on? I'm really debating on whether or not to get a Macbook Pro 17" dual core or a G5 tower (so I can add PCI express video cards). I would rather have the Macbook Pro so I could take it with me wherever I go, but if FCP 2 (or any of the programs in it's suite) run terribly then I may not have a choice on getting the tower. Any thoughts?

I picked up a MBP 17" as soon as I got FCP2 and it rocks. Went with the standard 2 gig of ram and the high rez screen. Out runs old FCP5 running on my Dual 1.8 G5 (would hope so....).

Not being tied down to the tower is a wonderful thing.

I just went to a apple FCS2 hands on seminar last week and it was very impressive and I recommend anyone who gets a chance to go try it out. They have 17" MBPs for you to go along with and check out the nice new features.

Multiple formats in one time line is great and fast. I think one of the best features is integrating the Motion templates into FCP and being able to edit any aspect of it from FCP. As well as being able to send your project out to Motion with no problem and of course the new 3D capabilities, like the multiple cameras for example, very nice. Oh and the jittery camera correction was amazing!

The crazy thing about it is that a new MBP today is faster than a dual G5 with 3 times as much ram. So imagine a little laptop being nearly twice as fast as your heavily invested desktop. Of course they recommend 4 gigs of ram if you buy a Mac Pro.

Color was very impressive as well but the training course isnt done yet so its pretty much as you go right now.
