Finally an LED worth nocting? (98 CRI...)

I just saw this over at another forum. Apparently these guys will be presenting their product at this years NAB.

In short, it's LED fresnels pulling a max of 120w giving you 25 FC at 10 feet. The design is also modular and you can bundle several of these hexagonal units up into fresnel arrays.
But best of all... check out their claimed CRi in every color: http://hexolux.com/cinewhite/ they only color not to go 90+ is blue and that is at 87.... the rest... well... have a look. (100 CRi in fair skin tone...)

I'm going to have to pay attention to these guys, cause if they price their product right, we might finally have a low watt, high CRI, good quality light on our hands.

They sure look nice. Wonder what they'll cost?

There have been high CRI leds out for a while... but the output was too low. What somebody needs to do is put a fanless CPU cooler as close as they can to the actual diode... everybody thinks LEDs have no heat, but they are actually really hot down inside... and that's what kills LED performance.

The big vented fixture is attractive... but I hope there's as much attention to heat control at the diode, where it's needed.

Yeah, the CRI is impressive but, the thing is, 25 FC at 10 feet is less than the output of a Mole-Richardson type 2351 200 watt Midget Solar Spot Fresnel at maximum flood (30 FC at 10 feet, beam diameter 8.4 feet). At full spot, the Midget puts out 295 FC with a beam diameter of 1.3 feet. That Hexolux light will probably cost $1500 to $2000 or more. I picked up my Mole Midget used for $120.

I understand the appeal of LED lights and it is definitely the technology of the future, but I think we are still in the infancy of the technology, as applied to film and video lighting. With a little time I think the prices will come way down. I hope so anyway.
