Final Cut won't recognize my deck

Hi. I was experimenting with hooking up my Sony Z1U to my dual-processor G5 to use it as a deck (temporarily) to capture some hi-def footage, and I could display the footage in the camera in my Log and Capture window just fine; but now suddenly for some reason Final Cut will no longer recognize EITHER my camera or my regular deck (a Sony DSR-30). Does anyone know what's up? I thought maybe I'd blown the Firewire ports on my Apple Cinema display; but when I plug the camera OR the deck into a Firewire port on my G5 tower, that doesn't work, either.

What could I have done to accidentally turn off recognition of my deck? I was fiddling with the Audio/Video settings and the Easy Setup setups and various things, but I don't think I did anything that would've caused the G5 to no longer recognize the deck or camera.

Any help you might have to offer would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I've also posted this on Creative Calf. Is that bad? Or is it only bad when you post under multiple headings/forums withIN DVXUser.com?

Try this... not sure if it will help -- usually only helps people who just upgraded QT or their OS.

Another thing you might try --

1) Try capturing something small in iMovie... did it work?
Yes - Then the above fix should work
No - You've got bad FW port or bad FW cable

2) Try a different FW cable.
Yes... keep going
No - Turn your computer off for 15 minutes with it unplugged.

Good luck,

Thanks, CaptM. I think I know what happened... I powered the Z1U off and then on again while it was still connected to the G5. Big mistake.... Did some research on the web this morning and found a post on dvcreators.net about the Z1U and blowing firewire ports on the computer AND the computer, so I think that's what I did. Apparently with the Z1U you're supposed to power off both the computer and the camera, connect them, and then turn on the power first to the computer and then to the camera. Of course the manual doesn't include this information, but it's in some tech bulletin somewhere.

I have the three-year apple protection plan, and they're going to send someone to my house to fix the tower, I presume at no cost, so that's great. Am a little afraid to find out how much it will cost to fix the firewire port on the camera, because it's not under warrantee anymore -- but one out of two isn't bad.

I will try your 15 minutes unplugged trick, though, and see if that works. Thank you!
