Ah, one of my dreams come true - surround support in Soundtrack Pro (and FCP 6)! New Color grading application ("Color"). New timeline that sounds like it has Vegas-like flexibility!

No mention of native MXF editing - in fact, still mentions "ingest" of P2 files...

Well, actually, tech specs say::
* Native editing for P2 at 1080i 50/60/VFR and 720p 24/24N/25/25N/30/VFR from P2 cards

* 1080pA 24 (Advanced Pulldown) supported via FireWire from AJ-HD1200A and AJ-HD1400

* P2 import dialog with browse, mark, and background ingest

I just went to the Apple site and took a little tour. Wow. I just wet myself.

Question, though - is there any way to upgrade from an academic version? I have read at times on this board that one could upgrade from an academic version, but the fine print on the Apple site says no - so I guess that's the final word.

So I'll have to pay $1,300 for an entirely new suite?

you can't upgrade FCS from an academic license. your option is to buy FCS 2 academic at $699 if you still qualify for academic pricing or to buy a retail version for $1299.

Or, of course, you could sell your academic copy to someone and then upgrade. I, for one, might be interested at the right price - or you could ebay it or post it here for others to bid on. :-)

Strange that....

A friend has been caught by that... there was no problem going from verion 4 to 5... wonder why Apple has chaged its policy? anyway apple have lost at least 1 customer over this!

only going to Final Cut 5.1 it was allowed... this was a special situation because 5.1 was the first universal binary. Apple did it so that it wouldn't discourage academic customers from upgrading their systems to intel based macs.

With every other version and every other program, you have not been able to upgrade academic licenses. The first universal binaries were the only exception.

Ummmm.... in my experience, academic pricing for FCP has been LESS than the cost of a full-version upgrade. I think that's reasonably fair! Most of the schools I've dealt with seem to sell FCP (studio, etc) for a lot less than the "official" academic price....

Hey, I may just want to do that. PM me and I'll be in touch once I figure out what I'm going to do.

What are the legalities of re-selling software, though? Especially an adademic version?

He has just told me he went from 4 to 5 (NOT the universal one) with no problem!

OK so when can we get FCS2 on our machines? With the purchase of my new mac pro I got a lot of rewards points which I can redeem from same place. Can I go to the same reseller and purchase the uprgrade? This means it would only put me out of pocket by about $200.
