Why is it that I have to render the hd footage before I can play it back before I edit it? I know there is a setting that I should choose something is wrong.
Well, if your mac is slower then this may be the case, but its probably that your timeline settings dont match your CLIP settings. What was the footage shot in? What speed is your Mac? What version of FCP are you using?
