Final Cut Pro X 10.3

If you haven't heard, a new major release of Final Cut Pro X came out yesterday. (In addition to new versions of Motion and Compressor.) It is really worth upgrading. A few key advances:

- Support NAS devices for Libraries
- Built in LUTs for Log and Raw footage (can be enabled or disabled on a clip-by-clip basis) though you don't seem to be able to load your own .cube files
- REC 2020 deep color support (in addition to classic 709)
- Range check in the viewer
- New, more configurable interface
- Better support for multiple monitors
- New timeline with better organization through roles and tracks

So far all my old projects have opened just fine. We're running this on both Sierra and the previous MacOS version at the office and it seems work on either.

Audio Lanes and Roles mixing are absolutely killer and the best in NLE audio mixing by a country mile.

If you've got a Mac and you overlook FCPX from 10.3 onwards you're absolutely barking mad.

Apple have just pressed the accelerator and left the competition down the road in the last century.

Does the 'lanes' mixing allow putting a plugin on a 'lane' or 'Role' yet? That's my only real issue with FCXP 10.2.3...if you want to put a limiter on a bunch of stuff, you have to make a compound clip first, & then if you double-click to go inside the compound clip....you can't hear the effect anymore ! Its the main reason I still do a round-trip to Protools, even for relatively simple jobs...

It would have made so much sense if each 'Role' had its own plugins + Volume/Pan, thus effectively giving FCPX a built in Mixer of sorts...

p.s I would try myself, but am in the middle of a job so am erring on caution ;)

Not sure about that.

I won't upgrade at this point because the new mac OS is reeking havoc with other apps.

+ 99% of my audio work is done in ProTools as well.

I believe you can do this now. Here's (maybe) how…

Once your cut is done, select everything in your timeline and create a compound clip out of it. This will (should?) allow you to add effects and plugins to the mixed-down roles.

Again…maybe. I haven't tried this yet.

Hi Stephen, yes this has always worked as a kind of 'quick fix'. Finish edit. Create big compound clip. Drop on 'master bus' limiter. However if you click to go 'inside' of the compound clip....you can no longer hear the applied effect...doh...was hoping 10.3 would address this fairly crucial issue !

Recently updated to 10.3 - now my Trim Tool isn't working as it did. If you have B-roll clips or text graphics fading in and out as separate clips with transitions on the ends, Trim Tool does not work. Works fine when the clip or text is laterally connected to something, but if it's a stand-alone clip I'm having to move the clip to where I want either the in or out point , then 10.3 is making me cut the other end and re apply the transition.

Yes, I spotted that too, annoying.

If you zoom out on the timeline the transitions become thin and the Arrow Tool can be used to alter the edit point as a workaround. It only works at certain zoom levels. Also you could use the Opacity fader in Video Animation to fade the end of B roll clips.

We should report this bug ASAP so it makes the next point release.

I love the update. It's forced me to give FCPX another try...I always come back to it to give it a go. So much faster than Adobe on Apple hardware...
