FINAL CUT PRO vs AVID vs PREMIERE

Re: FINAL CUT PRO vs AVID vs PREMIERE

Wow! Nice opinions guys. Thanks much.

Alright, I like the opinions. It definitely helps on your point of view, that is why I put it on post.

I was hoping more for detail information like, X was better than Y because of render time, but Z cost less than both, but doesn't do HD. Or some sort like that. Or although Z can't render HD, but their technical support and plugins are awesome.

Okay I have use the following in the past
1) in sync speed Razor with targa 3000
2) Final Cut Pro on dual G4
3) Premiere 6.0

Now having said that, I am originally from Wisconsin. So I will root (spelling?) for my home town. Which Sonic (now sony) Vegas 5.0 is produced. But didn't like. Just personal preference.

in-sync speed Razor kicked ass, but it ran on windows 2000/NT, which crash very often. Final Cut was great, but too expensive for my pocket book.

I love PC so AVid, in-sync speed razor, premiere pro were the final choice. I was going on cost, so the TARGA 3000 board for insync was too much $3000 for board only. Avid, I try to download trial version, but was unable too.

So, Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 was the champion.

My 2 cents on speed, It does matter. But since I consider myself a writer/director first and foremost, editing isn't my top priority. So I put my money in the DVX100A and accessories before I would put more money in an editing system.

Thank all guys and gals.

Re: FINAL CUT PRO vs AVID vs PREMIERE

Bottom line, you can get higher speed cheaper on PCs...

Barnes, you said that any final cut pro user can beat out any premiere user, and any vegas user can beat out final cut pro user.

Based on how similar each of these programs is setup, that's a flawed statement. The workflow of all of these NLEs is setup in a fashion to go as fast as the editor working on them. Someone who is extremely proficient at premiere will work just as fast as someone who's extremely proficient at final cut or vegas.

You said that you can't comment on a system you are inexperienced with. I HIGHLY doubt you have enough experience with each individual NLE to properly make the statement one is better than the other.

Bottom line, it all comes down to ability and not the technology you use. As long as the technology isn't hidering or slowing your ability, you can use whatever you want.

I say go with a PC... bottom line is, it's cheaper to build an editing suite with.

No, no, no. I said any PROFESSIONAL final cut editor will kick the crap out of any AVERAGE premiere user, and any PROFESSIONAL vegas user will kick the crap out of any AVERAGE final cut pro user.

I'm saying the exact same thing you're saying, an experienced editor will beat any inexperienced editor...horsepower comparisons aren't as important as we think them to be in most comparisons.

We're both saying the same thing, sorry for any confusion.

You said that you can't comment on a system you are inexperienced with. I HIGHLY doubt you have enough experience with each individual NLE to properly make the statement one is better than the other.

I agree, and I didn't make any statements endorsing any system over another. If you go back and review my posts, I repetedly state the same thing you are...that it's the editor that makes the cut.

While I agree that you can build a cheaper PC based editing solution, I simply argued for anyone in the market to consider what they'd like to learn and choose accordingly. Whatever you learn, you're going to stick with as long as possible, so you might as well make the decision based on whatever software you feel most comfortable learning rather then whatever horsepower you think is the most at the moment.

again, we're not in disagreement here...(I don't think?)

Re: FINAL CUT PRO vs AVID vs PREMIERE

LOL! Yeah, sorry about that, I got something different out of what you were saying. I thought you were saying a PC with Vegas would be the best because that's what you use...

I completely misunderstood and yes, we do agree completely...

Yeah, the software interface is far more important than the hardware. As long as the hardware won't break down on you, it doesn't matter what you get. The software is more what you'll be interacting with so it's more important it's something you're comfortable with. As long as the tools you're using don't hinder you as a filmmaker/artist, it's fine for whatever you're doing.

The average computer user who downloads music, surfs the net, checks e-mail, watches movies, uses word processing doesn't need hardware more powerful than a P3 1 Ghz (that's simply for the video) with windows XP...

My home computer is a P3 1Ghz with some minor upgrades and it's capable of running premiere 1.5, 3DSMAX, after effects, photoshop and any other tool I would want. It doesn't actually slow me down until it comes to render times. This is where a more powerful computer would actually help me. Using the programs though my computer is more than enough...

The horsepower of computers has gotten ridiculously powerful in relation to the software used on them...

Re: FINAL CUT PRO vs AVID vs PREMIERE

I've got you beat. My home computer is a P2 333mHz with 64megs of ram!

It studders if I type and play a CD at the same time, but for downloading, internet, and word processing...it doesn't need to be replaced.

I'm about to upgrade to a whopping P3 600mHz hand-me down!
