Final Cut Pro HD and aquiring 24p via FireWire

Can anyone help me.

Ive got footage shot in DVX's 24 frame mode. When I have set FCP to aquire in advanced pulldown mode (via its easy setup) there are many conflicts. The media is still being loaded at 29.97, the firewire device control is still operating at 29.97, and yet the sequences all are "auto-created" at 23.98. When I have manually changed the firewires device control to 23.98, and forced the capture settings into 23.98 mode, i get a very funny digitize, with one frame doubling. ABCDDABCDD, and I know that is not proper.

I also tried this last night on a titanium powerbook and I believe there is a discrepancy with the code and that hardware. I am going to give it one more go on a G5 with Pinnacle's CineWave installed (though I would prefer to use firewire). If it doesnt work, I am going to run a crash-dub of the stuff to BetaSP and cut it in NTSC 29.97 -- but I would prefer to do this "the right way" (aka PROGRESSIVE) to save on data crunch time and keep the look truly progressive.

Anyone offfer any insights here!

Thanks.

No it has to capture at 29.97 and then you need to edit in 23.98. Don't try to change things, leave it to the default! Don't mess with the preset, it always works!

Oh wait a second are you captuing using 24 (P) OR 24 (PA) this is very important!!! If you are capturing 24P edit in your typical 29.97 timeline, that is how it is meant to be. If you captured 24PA then you need to remove the pulldown and edit in a 23.98 timline. Please be clear here on which one of these modes you used.

FCP Editing, Thanks

FCP Editing, Thanks

Thank you both for your thoughtful replies. I went ahead and left the easy settings up, and captured the piece at 29.97, as you indicated it would be captured. That makes perfect sense. My pulldown removal is not working the way it is supposed to, I am getting jerky and repeated frames, so I am just going to do it at 29.97. Its going to be finished for NTSC DVD and VHS (Digibeta Master), so its got to be 29.97 at some point.

Thanks again. I have worked on a few projects using VariCam with great results. This is my first DVX project... and the image quality is amazing for such a small machine.

So did you film using 24P or 24PA? (was the scene setting in F5 or F6 mode?)
