Final Cut pro audio lagging?

Whenever I put an mp3 on the timeline, the audio sounds a bit like a combination of both popping and lagging. The song is listenable but every so often there is a bit of lag or a small pop. What is that?

That's because mp3 and FCP don't play well together. Convert the mp3 file to AIFF, either in QT Pro or iTunes then bring it back into FCP and you'll be fine.

Don't know about FCP and MP3 but popping, cracking, and lagging in your audio can also be a sign of your system resources being overtaxed. Adding more memory or cutting down on what the system has to do will often help (close programs that you don't need up, turn off tracks that aren't being used, etc).

Cheers

What sound card or system are you using? Cracking and popping is usually a sign of word clock not being locked.

Re> MP3 to AIFF is good advice. MP3's just suck and your Mac is doing realtime conversion just to play it back which will tax your resources a bit, however even a G4 1+ GHZ should be able to cope.

I'll have to try this on my FC system as I never use MP3's there - I give it a go and so what's what when there's an edit happening there. Week after next I think.
