Final Cut Pro at NAB

Am I right in thinking that Apple are not attending NAB this year? I'm concerned that PP cs5 and Avid mc 5 making to much ground. I don't want to have to go back to Avid is all.

Apple hasn't been "active" at NAB for some time now. They follow their own update schedule. Nothing to worry about really. There is absolutely no indication that Apple is getting lazy with their video applications.

Many people were worried that Apple gave up on Aperture, their photo management application. But then just recently they released Aperture 3 which has a ton of new features. I imagine that once the FCP port to Cocoa is complete we'll get one sweet update with lots of new features.

Just my 2 cents.

What's cocoa? I heard a rumour that avid wants to buy fcp. And are they working on 64bit QuickTime? Avid now edits native rd3 and canon h264 files? Pp cs5 have that mercury engine that seems to eat fcp alive. I hope your right. But I worry that fcs3 was recent enough for Apple to feel comfortable sitting on their ass for a while. Give it a year with no updates and run the risk of being taken over again. Just my paranoid 2cents.

Cocoa is the current preferred and Apple recommended Mac OS programming framework. Virtually all applications you use on a Mac are written using it. However some applications, like FCP, still use the old(er) Carbon framework. With very large applications, like FCP, Photoshop, etc. it can take a long time to rewrite them to use Cocoa.

It's very possible that FCP is currently being (at least partially) rewritten which is why we haven't seen major feature additions. Obviously we can't know for sure since Apple is so secretive.

Having said that, you have to ask yourself if new features added to other platforms are really all that important to your work and are worth switching for? There's always going to be better... That's just the nature of technology.

Personally I think what we have now is more than adequate for the vast majority of people. Well, it's more than enough for what I do. :)

Cools. Thanks for your well written response. I had no idea about any of this. As far as being adequate, I guess I come to hope for and expect the best from this software since it's been ahead of the game for so long. As far as something better always being around? I guess I don't want to have the burden that avid editors have had for so long with fcp. Since I know avid mc ok , it wouldn't be so bad. But pp? Never used it and would not be happy to have to spend years getting up to speed. Do you know anything about QuickTime becoming 64bit?

Nope. Apple is really good at keeping secrets. :)

And I get your paranoia. Like the rest of us, you've made a considerable investment of time and money into FCP. We all want FCP to be the best! :)
