new to final cut and video editing in general. what im trying to do is within one clip i want to slow do the speed of a certain section of that clip.

ive used my cut tool to select where i want to make my speed change at. ive put my timeline arrow at the spot of the cut, selected match frame - source file. selected the viewing screen, changed the speed of the clip and tried to replace the section i want but i keep getting the insufficient content error, ive been reading about handles and such but im still not grasping what im doing wrong.. any help would be greatly appreciated.:undecided

I just change speed by right clicking on the clip

If you have a three second clip and want to cover two seconds at 200% you have "insufficient content for edit"

Id do the speed change on a bit of the TL that doesnt have other audio or visual tracks, I guess its something to do with that

BTW - Im a bit of an FCP newb!

That means you didn't have enough handle (extra media beyond the cut) to cover the transition. Let's say you create a one second transition between two clips. That means you need at least 1/2 a second of additional material past each clip's edit point to make that transition work. If you trim a clip right up to the end of the media and then add a transition it won't work because there's nothing for the transition to use. Make sense? So yes retiming can help because it slows the clip down enough to extend more time toward the transition. Better is recording more footage so you always have handles.
