Final cut pro 4 and final cut pro 5

Hi all,

I'm not used to the final cut pro series, i was an avid person for years....but i got a new dual G5 and was wondering about final cut pro 4 and final cut pro 5...

what's the difference?

a friend tells me that final cut pro 4 is an HD version so there are not many significant changes to final cut 5...
can anyone else verify this for me please...

Also i heard that the new avid Hd is not a true HD software like final cut pro 5... true?

thanks to anyone who replies....(preferably without yelling thanks)....

Fairly major changes- FCP HD added support for DVCPROHD as its main upgrade along with a host of new less sexy features. FCP 5 adds Multicam and HDV support as its main upgrade with a bunch of new stuff. Your friend has it opposite. FCP 4 to HD was not a huge upgrade hence was offered free, FCP HD to 5 was major hence was charged for. Here's an article about FCP 5's new features:

Trust me- you want 5 if you can afford it.

Not quite sure what is meant about Avid. It is similar in its abilities to cut HD material.

Final Cut 4 doesn't actually offer HD editing, the free upgrade was to Final Cut Pro HD (4.5) which basically added the DVCPROHD codec. Personally I find 4 runs worse than 3 in a lot of ways, but there are also improvements.

FCP 5 is quite a major upgrade, and I would recommend the Studio suite. It is a very complete package. I agree with NoahK, if you can afford it, definitely go with FCP 5 Studio.
