Final Cut Pro 3 used to edit 24p in 48 hour film festival?

I recently viewed the Panasonic website and I read that a short film named baggage was made using the DVX 100 and edited in 24p using Final Cut Pro 3. Is it possible to edit 24p in Final Cut Pro 3 or do you have to have Final Cut Pro HD? Just wondering because I plan to purchase a DVX 100A and I am currently using Final Cut Pro 3 (without cinema tools).

Hmmm -- you can capture 24fps sourse material, but that isn't what the dvx gives. There's no advanced pull down in FCP3... or at least not that I could find. I'll search through the manual for 3.

This is from the what's new section of the manual --

New input and output features

Support for 23.98 fps video

Final Cut Pro now allows you to capture, edit, and play back 23.98 fps high definition video. This is significant because a new generation of video cameras lets you acquire high definition video at a variety of user-selectable frame rates, either interlaced or progressive scan.

Thanks for your help.

You can shoot in 24p mode (F5) and use FCP to capture and edit in a normal 29.97 timeline.
The footage will be 24 fps (and appear as such). You can edit this way fine just don't expect to go to film easily or to convert to pure 24fps final when you finish editing.

So I should be ok if I buy a DVX 100A and edit in Final Cut Pro 3? I doubt that I will transfer to film, I'm just trying to make a short film for my demo reel. Should I shoot in 24P or 24PA since I have FInal Cut Pro 3 without cinema tools? Thanks for your help.

Just shoot 24pnormal, F5 mode. Edit it like any other footage you'd shoot at 29.97 and it'll work just fine in FC3.
