hey guys ive always used adobe premiere and now i have to switch to final cut for film school. i just have a few q's..

1. i have a preview monitor, how do i get it display while im editing? i can get it to show footage while capturing but not while im editing..

2. on final cut 5.1 is there anyway to show the audio band as a wave form in the timeline? i know i can view it in the upper window but i like to have the waveform aviable on my timeline.

3. and finally when capturing is there anyway to capture the footage and then set a pop up window that comes up to name the file? or do i gotta name every file before i capture it?

I know these are basic questions but theyre driving me crazy!

thanks guys..

#1. This is an option in your preferences pane. Click on the blue Apple in the upper-left hand corner of the screen and go to System Preferences. From there, click on Displays. Next, click Detect Displays. This should make your desktop show up on your preview monitor. If it does, it will either be an extention of your screen to the left, which you can move windows over to, or a replica of your computer screen. To switch between these views, hold the function key and press F7. Then you can open up FCP with this monitor.

#2. You can change this option in the Final Cut Pro drop down window, with the User Preferences and the Audio/Video Preferences. However, this won't change any current Sequences you have open. In FCP, Go the the Sequence tab, then click on Sequence Settings. This opens up the settings for your current sequence. In the Audio tab, there is a box that you can check labeled "Show Audio Waveforms".

#3. I think you may be using "Capture Now". You need to do something called Batch Capture. In FCP, click on File>Batch Capture. This opens up your capture window. Set your in and out points for the first shot using the "I" and "O" keys. Then, click on Log Clip. This will open up a window to title your clip. Click okay and log the rest of your clips using that method. Then, highlight all of the clips in your browser by holding Apple and clicking on each individual clip. Then click on Batch Capture, a window will open up to ask you capturing preferences and then you click okay and it will capture all of your clips.

If any of these don't work, or the names of the tabs are different, sorry, I'm doing this off the top of my head, because I do not have FCP on this computer. I will check them later and update them. My answers should work though.

for the waveforms there's a button on the bottom left of the timeline... It should be the 5th button along from the left... a tiny arrow pointing right.. click it to reveal a dropdown menu.. and then select "show audio waveforms"

slows it down something rotten tho!
