final cut freezes

whenever I do any of the following:
Try and change the Audio/Video Settings
Try and Export Quicktime Movie
Try and Export Using Quicktime Conversion
FCP basically freezes. The only non-greyed out choices are the Edit menu and the Help Menu.....can't do anything from there. I have to force quit the program.
Anyone know why it might be freezing like this?
thanks
jeff

it always helps to know what version(of FCP) you are running and what you are running it on(what computer)..

I notice this, with my g4 machine I loaded it up with 3rd party software. I havent had once glitch for the 4 months I have had my g5 because I only load strictly apple software.

yah that woould be the first thing, did you do something before this happened or has it always been doing this? if its always been doing this reload it?

hmm

hmm

what kind of 3rd party stuff were you loading that caused the problem? do you mean 3rd party plugins for FCP? or 3rd party stuff for other programs? the only 3rd party plugin i loaded for FCP is a day-for-night filter plugin.
i'm going to need to make a quicktime of my project soon too.

I just mean anything, the feel I get from FCP is it is a very selfish brat that dosnt like non apple programs on the computer and yes plugins and any other programs running when your editing. Atleast thats when I get the best preformance.
