Final Cut Express won't open project file

I've got a couple Final Cut Express projects that I worked on a year ago. Now when I try to open the files I get a message that the file is "too new" for this version of Final Cut Express. I also have FCP7 on the same computer. I'm wondering if somehow the projects had been opened by FCP7 and now Final Cut Express can't handle them. If so, how could I open these Express projects in FCP7?

Any thoughts appreciated!
