It's generally believed online and through Apple's own marketing that Final Cut Express is not compatible with DVCPRO50 and DVCPROHD. However, I have FCE 3.5 and it's mentioned in the manual in about 10 different places that it is compatible with those formats. (Earlier versions, however, are not).
I got my hands on some DVCPRO50 and DVCPROHD clips and imported them, and voila, they work perfectly and edit just as easily as a plain old DV clip, and I can also export sequences in DVCPRO formats.
My HVX will be here in a few days, so I'll try live capture from it and report back. If it works this will be great news, as FCE is only $299, and right now they have a promotion where it's only $99 with a new MacBook or MacBookPro.
Interestingly, I did a quick search on my Mac HD and found that it's had the codecs installed all along, even before I installed FCE.
