Final Cut Darkens Picture?

Here is my workflow:

Canon A1 HDV 24f -> Capture on Firestore -> Drag quicktimes to hard drive -> Edit in Final Cut.

Problem:

When I open a clip in Quicktime it looks fairly bright.

In Final Cut (on the same monitor) it is much darker.

If I export that same clip (untouched) through Compressor, it comes out somewhere in between.

Here is an example:

FCP_dark.jpg

Window 1 - Quicktime
Window 2 - Final Cut
Window 3 - Mp4 (iTunes)

Is there a 'view' option in Final cut that will more accurately match the global quicktime playback settings on my system? I am not as concerned with playback through other devices/monitors, just a (more) consistent look between quicktime and Final Cut on my display.

Thanks!

Quicktime tries to color manage whatever it plays (depends on what your screen settings are - gamme, etc.), if I remember correctly, FCP doesn't and assumes that all source comes in with gamma 1.8.

Can't comment more without having to look through a bunch of links I've got stored somewhere that go deeper into this.

Other than that, I found that VLC displays content more consistently with what I see in FCP so I tend to use that as the final litmus test.

Thanks. That is helpful.

I think I am going to set it to PC gamma and see how that works. It is probably safer since that, and TV (the same gamma) is how most people will see this.

Thanks for the input.

If you have a broadcast monitor then use that as the check.

I never trust Quicktime for final color checking whenever I output for TV.

Click the 'Enable Final Cut Studio colour compatability' at the bottom of the QT prefs window.

Then click 'Accurate gamma' in FCP under /System Settings/Playback control

see where that gets you.

...shuxxx, guess it must be 7.2 then...

...or was it 7.3?...

Luis, are you running QT on a PC or Mac, as I think this is probably a Mac only option, as it's basically disabling/overiding ColourSync in my understanding.

I'm on a mac... and tired of dealing with these gamma shift issues.
Hmmm... maybe I'll finally update QT then.
I'd just read about other issues with 7.2 (or was it 3?) so I was holding off on updating.

Meaning there's a current issue with 7.3 reading previously captured DVCPro footage.
Some 'magic atom missing' kind of message, god knows what it means. I'm sure it will be fixed by Apple, but in the meantime Imagine Products have released a $29 fix.

7.2 'is the cookie', ie the version of Quicktime where the Final Cut gamma option came in. Louis was trying to track down which version of QT it came in at, I was trying to help track it down.

Nothing to do with biscuits I'm afraid.
