Final Cut and Vegas

I didn't know which forum this should go, qualifies for several I guess. Anyway, I have a new business partner. We both do a little bit of editing but he's on FCP and I'm on Sony Vegas 6. We own a Sony EX3 and a JVC HD100 with Firestore. If we're working on a project, how much headache are we making for ourselves by using different platforms? Would we be smart to consolodate? Go with either Mac or Vegas?

Obviously, depends on what function you guys are doing. If you're both cutting the same project, then using the same platform makes the most sense. If one is cutting, and one is coloring, etc., then it's not such a big deal. If you each need to open up the other's projects and not just finished files, then that could be a pain.

Choose a file format that both can be happy with. For me, that's DNxHD Quicktime files. But it could easily be QT PNG or Lossless, or whatever. You want something that will hold up.

A word of warning. Vegas is NOT very collaborative friendly. FCP is just the opposite. As much as I like Vegas for most things, if I had to collaborate on projects a lot, I'd use something else. FCP or Avid are much better choices for that.

Does FCP play well with EX3? Vegas 8 is supposed to handle it perfectly. It could be an excuse to upgrade.:)

Vegas 8.0c and 8.1 handle my XDCam EX files easily, so no worries there. On the Apple, you use the clipbrowser to wrap them into a .mov file and then everything works great. Vegas can handle the .MXF re-wrap as well as the raw .mp4 file that the camera writes.
