Fim school question

Out of curiosity, do the film schools have a script class, or a reqirement to turn in a short script as part of an assignment?

It really depends on what school and what class.

My first screenwriting class at my university (film degree program but not a 'film school') had the reqiurement you turn in the first 30 pages of a feature as your assignment.

The second one had whatever you'd written... it didn't need to be done, but I wrote a short and just spent the semester re-writing it and turned that in at the end.

I'm guessing some film schools require that aspiring directors / producers learn the art of script procurement, something that does not need to be penned by the student.

Other segments might include pre-prod activities such as casting, location research, etc.

My university had screen writing classes, in TV writing, the short film, feature film, comedy writing and an advance feature film writing. You had to write complete features and complete TV scripts. Even if you are planning on just being a director it is good to understand screenwriting so you can spot good scripts, know how to spot problems and make suggestions

The school I'm going to now, which is a year long course, we're required to write and direct at the most 4 of our own screenplays (you can choose to do docs instead for some projects). All of which you have to turn in at some point or another. It really depends on the school though, although, I'm sure most of them do.

The School of Visual Arts in New York has 3 different ways you can take the Film program. Directing, Cinematography, and Screenwriting. All three have the same first year requirements but years 2-4 are specific to the field that you've chose.

University of Texas has screenwriting classes, but you have something like 3 or 4 prerequisites before you can take those classes.

I would suggest short story writing classes if you can't take screenwriting.

USC has a screenwriting program, but even in the production program you are required to take at least two screenwriting courses, in addition to the films (which should decidedly have scripts) you are producing of your own.

I took a screenwriting class at a local JC, but yes, most film schools should have a screenwriting class of some sort.

For my class we had to turn in the first 30 pages (first act if its a feature) of our script as well.
