Filters

I have a Canon HV20 (43mm thread), wide angle lens (72mm) and I will shortly be buying a DSLR with varied size threads dependent on the lenses used. I intend to buy a few ND filters and CC polariser. This is probably a basic question but is there any problem with buying at least a 72mm (maybe larger) in each of the filters I need and then use a combination of step up rings to match the lens filter size. Glass is expensive whereas the step up rings are relatively cheap.

Thank you for the reply. That's what I was thinking but instead of a square filter with a filter holder, use a large circular filter with step up rings. Is this feasible?

I use a 52mm screw-on ND filter on my 43mm Panasonic GS500 camcorder via a step-up ring to avoid vignetting when stacking filters and as a bonu the filter fits on a Nikon D50's kit lens (52mm) as well.

MHH, I was thinking along the same lines.

Pardon me if I seem to hijack your thread a bit.

I have a bunch of 72mm screw on filters and I bought a step up ring to attache to the front part of all my lenses. I'm currently using a Redrock M2 adapter and I think this should be fine. I'd hate to have to purchase the 4x4 filters for a mattebox instead of just using my screw on ones that I already have.

I'd really hate to have to purchase a new day-for-night filter.

I'm assuming you could get to any thread size using 2 step up rings. For instance, I doubt that there is a 43mm to 72mm step up ring but I could use 43mm to say 58mm and then 58mm to 72mm. I'm also assuming I wouldn't have any issues with vignetting with this arrangement.

These step up rings are really cheap on e-bay. It would also not restrict me to just cokin filters so I could get a choice of good quality glass, at say 72mm.

MHH, I too have a Canon HV20 (trying to get rid of it though) but yes I had to daisy chain a bunch of step up rings even just to get it to work on the Redrock, which seems to be perfectly acceptable. Actually now I think of it, don't you mean a Step down? Either way I don't see the rings being a problem with the filters.

Anyway, to specify, I have a Sonia 42 to 52, then a Sonia 52 to 72
