Filters: which sizes ?

Next week I'll go for my first matte box ever, so I need your good advices. :-)
It will be the 4X5.65 clamp on matte box from Cavision (rods can be added later...) and it comes with one 4x4 and one 4x5.65 or two 4x4 filter trays.
I wonder in which cases you're using 4X4 or 4X5.65 ??
I'm interested in a schneider filter kit (pola, ND .9, Black Frost 1/2) in 4X4...

Thank's a lot.

Fred.

Good question. My century MB only holds 4x4 and it's fine for wide screen. It seems like the larger filters are advertised for wide screen cameras (film), but I'm not sure why. I think the option for you to have a 4x5.65 is good just in case you run into some cheap 4x5.65 filters on ebay, but for the hvx I think 4x4's work perfectly. I've heard the cavision MB is slightly flimsy, but if that's all your budget can get you then you do what you gotta do. I also picked up that Schneider kit, and it will cost you twice as much to buy them individually. All 3 of the filters are usable, the down side being you will soon want more grades of the nd, and you'll suddenly be filter addicted.
The upside is they look great.

thanks a lot dogcat.
But this is not very clear for me yet... What's the pros of having a 4X5.65 nor a 4X4 matte box ? For the 1.85 format and more ?
Is there anyone to clarifie ?

Thanks again.

Fred.
