Filters and Lens Reflection?

Hey guys,

Just had a quick question. I shot some footage last week and I encountered a strange problem. Most of my stuff looked good, but whenever I shot towards the sun, I could see the reflection of the lens in my shot. Of course, I didn't notice it in the LCD or EVF while I was shooting. But anyway, I had my clear filter and a polarizer stacked up. I think one of these caused the reflection. I usually leave my clear filter on no matter what, but I'm thinking maybe I should have taken it off in this case. Anybody else ever had this happen? Thanks.

You could have either been seeing lens flare--where the light bounces around between the lens elements or some flare and/or reflections from your filters. Multicoated filters will help and you should be using the *least* number of filters necessarry for the shot. So you didn't need your clear/UV filter if you already had a polarizer on the lens.

Stacking filters could lead to that, especially lower quality filters. I sometimes see my lens reflections through only the UV filter, but it's not as common. But definately, there are times when the UV filter has to go. If there was an element that could remain permanently attached to your lens in every possible situation, they would have manufactured it inside the lens...

Cheers!

Thanks guys. GenJerDan has the closest thing to my problem. My reflection was MUCH worse than that. I wish I had a computer to post some pics up. I'll try to when I edit the footage, hopefully in a week or two. It definitely wasn't lens flare, it was a full-on reflection of the entire DVX lens. I even had a Cinetactics Matteblox on there to help stop the flares. I was using Tiffen clear and circular pol filters so I don't really think its a question of quality. I guess I'll just have to take my clear filter off when I use the polarizer. I'm sure glad I didn't need those shots:) Thanks again dudes.
