Filter to get

I am stretching my pocket, but though I am not able to get everything all at once, I am trying to buy things once.

I was thinking about getting a 3-piece Tiffen kit from B&H, then I went to the LA HVX meeting in LA today and heard that I should instead get one good piece from B+W they all say Haze on the description, is that still clear?
I also heard from him that Barry uses B+H, and he then told me to make it a UV filter.
The idea is to only get something to protect the lens and wait to get the polarizer I want so badly till I can get a Matte box such as the Mini that Redrock is putting out "sometime in January" (might have forgotten so don't quote me unless corroborated by someone else who attended the meeting today) but I do remember his saying clearly that it will be $500.

So I wonder, is that the way to go? I will always need a clear filter to protect the lens, even when I get an M2 I won't go arround with lenses on the camera all the time... so a good clear is a good investment, but I'll have to wait to have a polarizer till I can afford a Matte box...

Also, what's with UV filters? Does it really help? How?

Most if not all people get a UV filter (the threaded kind) to protect the lens, it also, as it's name indicate, reduce the UV which can make an image a litle hazy at time(good filter to have in L.A).
Since you live in L.A, go to Film tools, they usually have better prices than B+H and they specialise in film and video.

I'm a believer of not putting anything in front of my lenses unless there is no other choice.
But, if you're going to put a UV filter on the front, don't skimp on it.

Why would you spend $5k+ on a camera and then put a cheap piece of glass in front of it?
Do the research and buy the best quality glass filter you can find.

Also clean it meticulously. Can't tell you how many times I've seen UV filters on a camera that were so cruddy they looked like a Petri dish that had been growing something in a lab for a month.

i put glass the next day i got my hvx, i think its a must... its a good safety precaution... when sh*t happens (and it will) the glass may save you...

i did a short test with me hvx (with uv filter) and my friends hvx (without) just to see the difference... my friend and i were hard pressed to see any difference. maybe to better trained eyes they can see it, but to normal joes like us, we didn't...

i agree with n8ture to clean that thing when as much as possible...

i got my tiffen uv filter from evs in burbank... i think the uv is all you need for straight shooting... more will come when what your shooting calls for it...

see, that's what I was going to get, a Tiffen pack with a Clear, a Polarizer and a Warm UV17, but I was told they were bad, and to get a good one from companies such a B+W

n8ture, nice wolf footy, lol, it was one of the first shockingly good footy examples with the HVX, I remember it! I also remember that you didn't specifically go and try to get wolfs but gorgeous slomo of those guys eating... shocked my girlfriend but still, gorgeous color and framing, somehow i remember it...
thank guys for all of your posts!
I might go with one high-dollar UV to protect the lens, but I might find myself taking it off for "important" HD shoots if I don't need it.

still wish I heard someone vouching for the Tiffens since they are so cheap! but if I don't get a strong responce b4 Monday I am going with B+W

There's no need to be afraid of Tiffen filters. They've received Academy Awards and Emmys and you'll find them in use on major film and television projects. B+W, Schneider, and Tiffen are all brands you can trust.

The affect of a UV filter on your image is pretty subtle and you'll be hard pressed to see a difference even when doing a side by side comparison, as you've found. The filter willl remove some of the blue case in shadows and far distant areas of your shot. The haze filter is similar, with a faint pinkish tint to warm the image. The difference between the two is very, very subtle, so if you have one, there's little point in getting the other. This is why the 3 filter kit you mentioned is not really a good choice -- it's not that the filters themselves are bad, its just that it includes two virtually identical filters.

The Clear and the UV... ye, I realized that, ut I look at it like this, if I bought them individually it would be almost 200 for two of themand this way I get a pola and two "clears" for protection, I'll use the UV first till it busts with a flying rock then use the clear. This of course if I don't notice an effect from UV/warm if I end up getting the Tiffen package, still would like to hear more people vouching for them before I get them though.
Just found out that I won't be placing orders till next Wednesday anyway.:-Cry(DBG):
