Filter size for the Century 0.6X?

I just got my Century 0.6X lens and it sure looks like there are some front filter threads. Anyone know the diameter of the threads? Also, just griping, but they could have included a small pouch/case with the lens. I wouldn't have minded paying an extra $20, for a nice fitting case to protect the lens.

The threads are not filter threads, they're a remnant of the manufacturing process. I asked Century about this at NAB and they said they're not standard threads and no filters would fit them, they're used in assembling the lens.

Thanks Barry. I had a sneaking suspicion that they might not be standard threads, since there was no filter size listed on the lens. What do you do about filtration and shading when you're using the 0.6X? I think I remember that you have a Flare Buster--is that effective for shading?

Re: Filter size for the Century 0.6X?

The .6 is a real bugger for flaring. If light shines directly into the lens you're likely to get an "explosion" of what looks like dustmarks all over the picture... look closer and you'll see they're hexagon-shaped, meaning they're flares reflecting the aperture!

The Flarebuster is okay, but a little small. For the DVX DVD "beauty shots" of the DVX we ended up rigging a "mattebox" from black wrap to try to control the flaring. We had a 1k softbox about 1 foot above the subject DVX, and were gliding the shooting DVX across it at macro distances with the .6x, and the flaring was objectionable, but with the "mattebox" blackwrap shield it really helped. Also made for a very cool effect because the shield was so big it actually blocked light from half the subject - so as we pulled backward across the subject DVX, the light would be "revealed", and it was like the sun was rising or something... pretty cool...

Other than that, flare is a problem, as you'd expect with such a wide, huge hunk of glass. And I don't know of any mattebox that will fit it.

Haven't bothered with filtration, I shoot raw 95% of the time, the only time I really reach for a filter is the Polarizer.

Yeah, I noticed the flare immediately when I was testing the lens and start looking *really* closely at those threads. I'm surprised they didn't just build in an integrated hood or provide some standard threading. I've got plenty of blackwrap, but I'll have to rig something better in the field that won't crush too easily. The local art supply store carries this thin corrugated black plastic board that should be useful for hacking out a quick lens shade. With a little velcro, it should do the trick. Your shot sounds very cool--I'm sure the DVD is outstanding. I don't use much filtration either--other than the Pol and ND Grads. Everything else is usually much simpler to do in post or in-camera.
