filter questions 72mm & 4x4

Charli

cool little "title"
Once you've bought a mattebox, do you use 4x4 filters or the 72mm filters?
I'm about to begin my purchase of filters and I know which circular polarize
filter I want, Tru-Pol, unsure about the UV filter yet, unsure if I should be buying
72mm or 4x4 and no, haven't bought the mattebox yet, that's also on my list.

I feel sometimes when I'm researching a thing, that I'm walking around in circles.

I sent ya a Pm about my filter choice....the tiffin set with a polarizer, enhancing filter, UV filter and 812 warming filter. I like the set and the enhancing filter makes my artwork pop. I work with a lot of copper and the reds-oranges really sing with the filter.
I bought it because it was there when I picked up my camera but I think drop in filters would be faster.

if you're walking around in cirlces then maybe you should get the 72mm circular filters.

seriously since you don't have a mattebox yet. it would be in your best interest to get a 72mm UV protector. that way you're guarding your precious Leica lens and i really mean that. the lens is expensive, quite expensive. the cheapest i found was $895 and on average depending on the type of lens was $2,500. so it is in your best interest to cover it up.

then once you get the mattebox you can get the 4x4 filters or whatever size the filter holder accepts. but keep in mind you may not always have the mattebox on so there will be times the 72mm filters will come in handy. cinematographers and photogrpahers carry an assortment of filters. it's better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it.

novelt - you know, that makes a whole lot of sense. Thank you for your time.

you're very welcome and just in case here's where i purchased mine...

B&H Photo & Video

I bought the Tiffen UV for $30 and haven't had any problems with it. there's another thread somewhere on this forum where a user mentioned having a reflection in the glass while shooting outside. I can only say that hasn't happened to me. Do be sure to check them out and if you have any questions if I can't answer right away, I'll investigate...get my CSI gear and...oh maybe that's a bit much.

aahhhhh...the 812 warming filter... i use that quite a bit. well i don't overuse it, but when you need a tad bit of warmth it's very nice to have. one thing i don't get about the tiffen samples. it says "simulated image" :)

didn't affect my purchase though. i was going to get them after reading an interview from a cinematographer and he says he has an assortment of filters, mostly Tiffen. geez that was awhile back, but if i find it i'll post it. besides the filters it was a very good read.
