Filter question for the day sky photographers.

sup everyone,

i'm in the middle of ordering a dvx and a bunch of other stuff from EVS and i need your help.

i just want to know, which Schneider Graduated filter should i get: .3, .6, or .9?

I'd just like to get the one that would allow me to get beautiful clouds and sky under the widest variety of lighting conditions, i'd like the most versitile darkness level. Rush at EVS has given me some advice, but i'd like to hear more opinions on the matter.

thanks a whole lot!! this forums the $#it!! :D

Re: Filter question for the day sky photographers.

The filter most commonly sold for this purpose on a DV camera is the .6ND Soft Edge Grad-- tho some prefer the .9ND SE Grad. The .3ND only reduces the sky brightness one stop which is not enough in most situations --- at the risk of having my humor misinterpreted--- we, of course recomend buying a set of three !

One other thing, if you do not have, or are not familar with the effect a polarizer can have in terms of darkening the blue in the sky and making clouds look whiter, you should look into a polarizer as well.

yup, i'm getting a circular polarizer too.

any other ones you would recommend?

i'm also getting a UV one, and a .6 solid ND. i'd like to get the whole range of NDs and grad NDs but i think i'm gonna have to wait till i graduate and get a job first.

unless someone wants to spot me a thousand bucks or so?

please?

no?

darn it.

Re: Filter question for the day sky photographers.

Hi Bill, I told Lowy that the two most important filters are UV and Pola, then comes all else.  Lowy was definitely the most dedicated first time buyer to high-grade filtration and buying the best things to put in front of his lens.  I really respect that, when someone knows exactly what he wants, sacrificing all other support gadgets and gear to achieve a specific visual look.  Lowy, best of luck with your gear and thanks again! :D
