Filter advice

B + W filters are the best, period.. (I am a prof photographer.)
Never use a Square polarizer - always use one that screws on the front.
Cokin filters are organic glass. - Make great grads.
Cokin P system can work on DVX100's (all) - don't use with wide angle.

Circular Polarizer - shoot through car windows, see through surface of pools, store fronts. Cannot believe how many people shoot into glass and there is nothing but reflection when it is not needed. Regular polarizers (not circular) can screw up your auto focus.(if not using 24p)

Haze 1 reduces the amount of mist in the air when shooting mountains (far away subjects - water vapor in the air)

Haze 2 - Even more reduction of mist in the air.

UV - protection for lens

Orange - use this if you plan on making everything in black and white later - it will correct your contrast. Especially for clouds.

Graduated - watch where your middle line is. Use two to make water more blue and sunset more vivid (yellow up and blue down)

Is it orange or red? I hear red is great for b & w photography, but does it have
a different effect on video?

Red is very dark - your sky will be almost black.. if you want that look for a vampire movie or to make a dramatic statement then that would be good.. use a green filter for people by the way.. (mind you I am assuming in post you switch it to b&w.)

Thanks, that's good to know. I liked your advice. Never thought about Cokin but
I only buy b+w (except for one Heliopen uv haze filter I have as I'm waiting for my
b+w 010 haze to come in).

It's the price that will kill you. It's cheapter to get a circular polarized filter for the
adapter than it is to get a 4x4 for the mattebox. Sometimes it's just economics.

jimwww ..Thanks for the tips ...especially the Orange filter for B&W .
The haze filter tip, it comes at a good time as I wil be in Lake Placid N.Y in July .Hopefully getting some shots from White Face Mountain .

I should add that you need a Magenta filter when shooting people under florescent lighting as it casts green. (Fuji film Reala does this automatically so if you need to shoot stills in a classroom take Fuji Reala film with you.) A circular polarizer must be on the lens - not in an adapter - it will not work as well - I tried cokin before for that - they don't work well. FYI - It is the only thing I have found that HAS to be on the lens.. pretty much everything else can be on a Lee or a Cokin. I like Cokin grads the best - by the way they are organic glass - not plastic.

So your advice is to put a 72mm uv haze filter and then put a 72mm polarize
filter on top of that? Dang. I was going to do it the other way, on the adapter.

I've looked into Cokin, so thanks for that. Also for the color filters. I do plan to
do a Noir so that helps a lot.

Magneta for flo and orange for b&w, got it.

Charli

No no.. A polorizer is used independantly over any other filter.. it should not be used (typically) with any other filter.. It also takes away 1.5 to 2 stops of light so adding another filter on that would really add up.

Well, I'm considering a B+W UV filter...for the DVX102b I should go for the 72mm screw on right? I'm not really sure how it works..

Jim - since we are on the subject of filters, would you use a color correction
filter with a UV? or is that also to be used independently? Would you use the
color correction filter on the adapter?

So many questions - gah.

Charli

I would not introduce two types of filters like that.. UV filters are sometimes pinkish - so they add a hint of color.. then to add cc on top of that.. I don't advise it.. cc separately.

A circular polarizer is just that.. you can move the end of it to determine how much reflection you want in something or how blue the sky is.. you cannot move that if another filter is on top of that..

You also lose 1.5 to 2 stiops of light using a polarizer so I would not want to add to that as well. A UV filter is redundant on a polarizer. The polarizer will also get rid of some haze.

So what kind of size fits the DVX100B? Is it a 72mm? 4x4? What about the Tiffen filters? Is there a basic kit that contains all the ones you mentioned above or do you have to get them individually?
