films that changed your life(or made you more aware)

Those are two very different things...

Films that changed my life...
The Wolfman, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Halloween, The Fog, The Thing (JC), The Exorcist, Star Wars: A New Hope, Superman I.

Films that made me more aware...
Hmmm....I dunno. Have to think about that one.

There, I edited my post above to be a link to the IMDB comment page. Not too many people have seen Mule Skinner Blues, but it is my favorite movie. I always mention it when I can. It may just be something that struck the right chords with me when I saw it, but the people in it were my neighbors, I see them at the grocery store and around town still. All the places they shot are at Mayport, a little fishing village I used to live in out here at the beach. And it deals with the underbelly of the inhabitants there.

Beanie is just exactly what you see in the movie, looking to make his mark in the horror movie world. Steve Walker is just what you see. And in the movie, he is asked about himself, and he says "I'm a drunk musician...with a future." Ricky Lix, well, I know some of his family and what you see is what you get. I thought he was going to get thrown out of the movie theater at the premier for being drunk and forcing his autograph on people. hahaha!!!! All of these people are just what is in the movie, including the lady who kept her dead dog in the freezer.

Ah, yes. My 'hood.

Its a definite slice of southern trailer park, heh! But there is something else there if you watch it with an open mind. Its funny and sad, inspirational and depressing all at the same time.

"The Hellstrom Chronicles," Right On! You rock for mentioning this gem. We're all doomed, the insect world has begun it's assent. Classic.

Without a doubt, it's Halloween. I saw it when I was 5 years old and it scared the **** out of me. It's the movie that made me want to be a filmmaker.

It's cliche'.

Very early Freshman year of college. First theatrical run.

Dead Poets Society.

For:

Theme, and its impact on my group of friends, who are still very, very close 16 years later.

Importance of that particular year, personally and historically.

Association with one of the great old independent movie theaters.

And what happened afterwards.

films that have shaped my life...

Raiders of the Lost Ark - my dad took me to this three times and eventually explained that there were people who actually "made" movies. ever since then i was on the path to becoming a filmmaker. (age 7)

Casablanca - again, my dad rented this for me to encourage my interest in filmmaking. he said, "this you have to see because anywhere you go in the world, it's a movie that everyone has seen and can talk about". started to realize that movies were more than entertainment. (age 14)

Taxi Driver / Raging Bull - scorsese turned me on to the potential of a highly subjective camera. (age 17)

The Double Life of Véronique / Three Colors trilogy - introduced me to the concept of trancendental humanism. (early 20's)

Sculpting in Time - this is the book by Andrei Tarkovsky on the art of filmmaking. it is my bible. (late 20's to now, age 30)
