Filmmaking tricks that can be used in music production

Hello!

I'm quite new to filmmaking, but I was curious if there are any tricks that can be learnt from this trade that can be applied to music production?

I have this friend who's a filmmaker and a music producer. Somehow his music has this unique, vintage, organic sound to it that's impossible to imitate, even after years of studying all possible techniques of music production.

This got me thinking, what if he ain't using any of the techniques from music production, but rather from filmmaking? What you guys think?

One thing he probably does is using video tape saturation. But what sort of tape, using what sort of equipment?

there is no "video tape saturation", at least not the saturation your talking about. Video tape now is digital but even the analog tape acted more like digital than analog audio tape.

Most "filmmakers" who don't do it for a living pay very little attention to sound (till it's so bad that they ask for help).
But...

What would cross over? Listening, critical listening would be the biggest.
From a sound editors point building tracks in film is generally more bit's and pieces. Musicians are generally more about getting the sound from their instrument and sound editors are more about finding what collection of sounds will make the "sound" they need. It's more of a music concrete workflow.

Film is not about producing a waveform that looks like a block, so maybe he's actually got dynamics in his tracks. That would certainly be "vintage" sound.

If he's a friend then instead of spending the time to "years of studying all possible techniques of music production" how about asking him?

I imagine it's basically "I do whatever it takes to get the sound I want". I suspect it's more of a practice till it works than a open the text book to page 235 kind of thing.

There aren't really any "tricks", just a collection of techniques. For instance if he's doing an analog pass that alone is not going to give hime the "sound". It will also have to do with mic placement, EQ, levels, mixing, and a thousand other little things.

Or maybe he has a Funkadelicizonator.
