I am looking for suggestions on books, videos, dvd's, that teach you the are of filmmaking and camera work. What do you all recommend??

In addition to the really good books others have suggested on filmmaking I would recommend reading some books on acting methods and screenwriting. This will give you more insight into working with actors and how storys are put together.

Actually, "FilmMaking for Dummies" is great. I'm serious...it's got something in it for everybody. You should be able to find it on Amazon.com or your local Barnes & Noble.

yeah a LOT of the for dummies are really good.

flyfishing for dummies is pretty good as well.

the scott billup one is especially good because he talks about ways to use your video camera to look like a film camera and it is almost all technique not gadgets or anything.

some sage advice that when you read it your like, damn i never thought of that.

stuff you can almost instantly start using to get better shoots.

start small and aim high. there are hundreds of books about filmmaking out there and it'll cost you thousands if you buy them all. so what i do is just hang out in bookstores and read whatever interest me the most. then go out there and shoot. sometimes i go out into the woods, country side, busy place, on top of a building...etc, and listen to music and imagine a scene that soothes the mood. try playing music with different genre and see how it changes the feel of it. that is just one aspect of filmmaking and there are so many of them. the rest are learned through experience. so the more you shoot the more you will learn. books are just bunch of theories, doing it is another thing and sometimes frustrating, but fulfilling when you finish it. reading through this forum will actually give you bunch of knowledge already and so are other websites dedicated to filmmaking. so do a lot of short films and develop your own style of filmmaking. to me, the only golden rule is "if it looks good, if it feels good, if it sounds good...it's fantastic"
