Filming Sunrise and Sunset

Is it very risky for the CCD's to film sunrise or sunsets with the DVX-100? I'm wondering whether the exposure feature and the onboard ND filter is through mechanics or through internal software. If it is through internal software maybe if I slap on a ND filter in front of the lens that will give me more room to play with, and less risk, what do you think?

Hi there.

The ND-filters are indeed mechanical, and will most likely be needed when shooting this kind of shot. Together with the UV-filter you always keep on your camera (you do right? =)), they should do a pretty good job on giving you good exposure and colors, as well as filter the light that strikes the ccd plates.

It Is VERY risky to shoot sunrise/sunset scenes with CCDs. You should try to find a camera with saticon or plumbicon tubes which are made for shooting very bright lights . . . ;)

NOTE: I am just joking. The main thing on newer cameras is to make sure and not have the sun beaming directly into the viewfinder. I had a D30 viewfinder start smoking the other day when I wasn't paying attention and it was aimed at the sky.
