filming smoke

hey

i'm about to shoot a film on the dvx and i will need to really emphasise cigarette smoke in some shots, has anyone got any tips for capturing smoke?

also do different types of cigarette's make a difference, i did notice when shooting a film last year that herbal cigarette's really gave a much denser blue smoke.

Yes, a HARD backlight source will look the best. I don't know about those herbal things, but I'd think a wide cigarette (Camel Wide's are the only I've seen) would give you a thicker smoke than Virginia Slim 120:) Good luck.

keep in mind your background for your smoke. Obviously, if you shoot white smoke with a white background you will have a harder time seeing it. Definitely a hard kicker/backlight will emphasize smoke. I think a stick of the kgb will give you a broader definition.
cheers

True, or a cookie to break up the beam. Best is slats of light through the smoke, like if you put a heating vent (1 foot square) on a C-stand in front of a hard rim-light.

Along the same lines...to any of the smokers out there. what cigarettes give off that "crackling" sound when you inhale?

The ones that have a lot of seeds and stems.

Also, old stale ones, just about any brand.

But if you want that sound, I'd suggest ADRing it. Just mic a cig real close. They'll all make the sound. You can adjust the volume later.

Cloves make that sound. I'd suggest Blacks, myself.
