filming on a plane... how?

i didnt know which forum to post in, so i'll take a shot at it here:

i want to film a short that is set on a plane.... so... my question is...
how do can i?

i mean... the thing is i want to have the little oxygen masks come out and everything so technically i can't film that on a real plane, because even if i were to have the captain by some ODD and RARE chance to take them out, theres just some people that dont understand when they tell them "there's a film being done, so the masks will come down only for that, nothing serious is happening", the will go crazy -_-

well.. any sets or something where you can rent time to film or something?

any ideas?

There are plane sets in LA. One of the 48 Hour Film Contest entries for 2004 (The LA winner) was shot on one of these sets, so apparently there's SOMEBODY out there who can pull some strings.

Though I suppose it doesn't help much if you aren't located in/near LA.

I'm guessing that with all the Canadian production work going on there is at least one plane set up there as well.

Up until not too long ago, Universal Studios had a 747 mock-up on Stage 747. Actually, they had two mock-ups in there. You can contact them here for information on whether they have mock-ups on the lot at this time.

im in san diego. so i might be able to get up there. gotta find where they let you record though. after all im not going to record that much., just use it for like 2 hours or something.

Worrying that people will get freaked out by the oxygen masks deployed by a sympathetic pilot is about the same as worrying that if you take all of your clothes off and do a monkey dance on the plane, people may mistake you for a real monkey.

It's not a monkey, it's a monster!

Or usually you can borrow the "emergency static simulator" at some airlines flight training centre. They have slices of real commercial planes in order to train F/A to do their ordinary tasks or learn emergency procedures.

If you are East Coast, I believe there is also a plane set in New Jersey...I may be able to find it, if you wind up needing it.

you could also surprise everyone and start shooting your short on a real commercial flight, talk about genuine! I kid I kid....FYI I am pretty sure there is nothing like that here in Oregon...

The place in LA is called Air Hollywood. airhollywood.com
It has everyting set up but lighting, you have to figure out what you want and how to light it. We were able to talk them down to $200/hr so if you are low budget, you would have to shoot fast...

Try pulling a fully kitted HVX out of your carry-on on a commercial flight and let us know how that goes. My bet is you'll have an air marshall's size 12 up your backside pretty quick.

Or, at least, a prickly flight attendant anyway. Hmmm... that might not be so bad. Mile high and a movie.

Find a grounded plane. Small flight companies have many grounded planes/old planes. Get the company to support your film and maybe they will let you shoot in one of their planes. (But on the ground, obviously!)

Well, in Jamaica they had a couple of planes out at the airport that were grounded for repairs. Something happened to the engines and they had to wait a long time for the engines to be brought in by boat. Of course, it's not really practical to travel to Jamaica to film. :D

It certainly seems like there are possiblities out there. Sounds really cool. On a semi-related note, has anyone tried doing aerial photography for any of their projects? I have some scenes from an upcoming project that would really benefit from some aerial establishing shots. I understand that gyro stabilizers would be necessary, but has anyone done this?

jock, there is a snake on the plane....
Of thats my pet friend reggie....
I hate snakes jock
Oh come on show a little backbone........
