Filming LCD Monitors/tv's with the HVX

Hey guys,

I have a gig tomorrow that I need to film someone touching an LCD screen and moving things about (Think Minority Report). The screen actually does this so I cannot greenscreen them and add in later as these are product demos. What would be the best settings to shoot a screen to avoid flicker?

I'll be shooting 720 24fps HD.

Thanks

You can avoid flicker by changing the shutter speed to the same as the frequency of the lcd. Try to change the shutter speed to 50. Maybe do a test right now on your computer screen and see if it works out well.

Actually because of the nature of the LCD screen you should not have a problem just shooting the screen, there should be no flicker whatsoever.

You will have an issue with CRTs, but using the synchro shutter feature of your camera (and nearly all prosumer cameras have this now) should fix it. Simply point the camera at the CRT screen and increase/decrease the shutter until you don't see the flicker.

As far as shooting the screen, well lighting is very important, as well as what colors the LCD is producing at the time of the shot. I would light backwards in this situation: figure out how bright the LCD screen is, adjust your f-stop accordingly and then light the rest of the scene to match that f-stop.

You could also adjust the brightness/contrast on the lcd as well...also there should be color temp control in the lcd menu.

Meter the LCD screen directly, and expose for it.

Assuming you're using a light meter that takes direct readings.
