Filming in Texas

I'm based in Europe, usually there is no problem filming in a most European cities getting general downtown shots, except London, which is a pain.

Anyhow whats it like filming in Texas, I am over there working for a European based company for a few days, no doubt we will need shots of the local city where this corporate is based, Dallas.
Am i likely to encounter any problems police etc or does nobody really care, it just me with a camera and a tripod.

Thanks

My experience in Houston has been that you will be bothered. Everyone always tells me "when you're on a public street, you can shoot whatever." Firstly, have fun arguing with a business owner/security guard/cop about that, secondly, I've heard that it is literally ONLY the actual STREET that is public. Sidewalk, parking lot etc. all owned by those respective businesses/property owners. I pretty much refuse to shoot that type of stuff for clients these days unless explicit permission has been obtained.

Vultch, I just did a shoot for the Hyatt in downtown Dallas. Depending where you are shooting you might run into a few issues, but nothing serious. Always best to have a local sus out all locations before you arrive. Good luck!

Also, if you need specific shots, let me know. I can get it done for ya.

I had a Metro train driver open her window when she pulled up to the Rice University stop and ask me if I had a permit to photograph. (I was using a Panasonic G6, so it wasn't obvious that it was video.) When I told her I didn't need one, she got all bent out of shape. Remember, the burden of proof is on them. If they get crazy, call the police, then advise the cop to consult their legal adviser. All major police departments have one. I also got hassled on the Galveston-Port Bolivar ferry. After I left, the Galveston police stopped me. After a very reasonable conversation, they let me go with no problem. If you don't cop an attitude and act as if you belong there, as you do, most peace officers will give you a break.
