Does anyone have any experiences to share from Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan? For instance, did you have any hassle bringing gear in and out of these countries?

Thanks!

Kazakhistan is OK ,, just get filming permit or act like you are journalist or foreign press member etc.. a local fixer can do the job . people friendly Uzbekistan same you need a fixer with strong connection .

Thanks. What about arrival. Should I expect any hassle at airport arriving to Kz? I have a small camera, but also some sound gear that looks fairly pro.

I went to Kyrgyzstan this past summer. I didn't have any problems when I arrived, but returning, they forced me to open my camera bag. They weren't sure what my shotgun mic was, so it was a good thing I learned how to say "microphone" in russian. (It's essentially microphone with a Russian accent).

I went to Mongolia 2 years ago with 2 DVXs and 2 SLRs. I went in, having passed through China, no questions asked. I risked it and was lucky. The only thing I took was a letter from my Customs office declaring the equipment I was taking out of the country so I wasn't hassled on the way back in for taxes etc...

Good Luck!

shot the amazing race there months ago, must have a carne for your gear. even then you may have problems. you must have a work visa. with the work visa they give you a picture i.d. When ever the police your not from there they will stop you and if you dont have i.d. then you will be arrested. Your not allowed to just shoot with your camera everywere. must be very careful. The time we spent was in Almaty......

Willship I am a big fan of the Amazing Race, I dont want to Hijack the thread, but I would love if you give us some info on how it's shot, what kind of camera etc. Do the same cameraman always follow the same contestnts? etc. Thanks
