Filming black backgrounds

I trust that you are attempting to achieve this in a still, not a motion shoot.

This is a classic stop motion shot, the background is "black" because it is being denied light. From the character of the light, I would guess that a fast strobe with a large softbox was used as the key, which was placed nearly on the camera's horizontal axis. The source does appear to be above the camera's vertical line (this can be seen in the shadow under the model's chin).

Now if you are trying to get this "look" in a motion project, you can achieve the black background easily with just a bit of lighting control. An egg-crate would be a good choice for your key. Duvateen for the background would also be helpful. I would add just a bit of hard fill light to give a little character to the face and would also add small source as a hair light to give a bit of separation from the background.

This shot is neither wonderful (other than the stop motion) nor difficult to achieve at all.

The key in motion would be a VERY fast shutter speed (to freeze the motion). Many refer to it as the SAVING PRIVATE RYAN effect (whe used in film).

Oh, sorry. Darn it, I wasn't paying attention. You specifically said "Not the water." Never mind.

Also, it has a certain quality of being strongly lit while still having nice detail in the skin tones. Probably a lot of light was used and the camera was stopped down (further darkening the background) along with probably a fast shutter.

bright light close to subject, dark background far away from subject. camera close to subject. try f2 to keep anything in dark background out of focus. easy.

Saw a great post on CML forum ... Im a bit busy now but Ill try to dig up the post process which is pretty neat to getting a filmic version.

But your subject is "filming black backgrounds" which means that maybe you don't want to light the black background? In this case then it's all about ratios and having that drop out because you know the ratio of your camera. That and yes... spill control.
