Filming a production in Ikea?

My wife & I were watching a Canadian production (aired in California through a local PBS) of a "home fitness" program. The duo were demonstrating bed exercises (with clothes on) and living room calisthenics. As they moved from room to room, we could swear it was inside of an Ikea.

After hours production rental space at Ikea? Anyone heard of this? We thought it was brilliant.

Not having seen this... my guess would be they bought a lot of cheap 'good enough for now' furniture to build their set... Don't know what other 'production values' may have been in play, but for $2K one could probably buy enough IKEA furnishings to make an 'empy house' look ok.

Ten years ago, I filmed the original The DVX DVD footage in a furniture store. Can't remember exactly what it was called... but it was a western-US chain, and they set up all sorts of different areas with different themes, so we got ... I don't remember, maybe a dozen different "sets", all pre-lit, all professionally decorated, for free. Of course, afterwards, I did have a few people ask me if I shot it in a furniture store, so I guess we didn't totally get away with it, but still, considering it was a zero-dollar production, I thought it worked out well.

I talked to the manager, told him what I wanted to do, and he said "sure, come in before we open, we have about three hours between when the stocking clerks arrive and when the doors open, so you can shoot then." No fee, no hassles with "corporate" or anything, we just did it...

So ask your store manager, it's possible they'd allow it. Of course, entirely possible that they wouldn't, but you won't know until you ask.
