What I have:
Video - Panasonic DVC30 - 60i, 3 1/4" chips, basic manual control
Audio - Excellent dynamic Mic w. windscreen, XLR to 1/4" cable, 1/4" to 1/8" adapter
What I'm Filming:
The Decemberists, November 2nd, Terminal 5, NYC
My Concerns:
Audio - I know the venue well, and it has amazing acoustics. I know where to stand to be able to capture the band well, as well as the audio. Of course, I don't want to use the onboard mic. I know dynamic mic's don't work so well for recording dialogue, but this is a concert. It will be loud. Would it make sense to use the dynamic mic in order to capture the loud, lower frequencies better? Or would that result in an ugly bass-type sound?
Video - The venue is not that dark, usually. Seeing as how I'll be pretty close to the band, and the venue has tons of great lighting. In sync with the music, they mix purple and yellow, red and orange, blue and green, all really well at the right moments. I'll be shooting handheld from the crowd, but that's not a large concern of mine, I'm okay with that style of a shot.
I'm wondering what f stop I should keep it at (I believe the f stop goes down to 1.6)
Also, I'm curious about shutter speed (I figured 1/60, it matches up with the frame rate, gets enough light, band doesn't dance around crazy on stage so I won't worry to much about blur) Anybody have suggestions otherwise?
Should I turn CineGamma on for a softer look, or would it be better to just drop the detail to about -3/-4?
I'll probably have the blacks crushed in post, because there will be a good number of black shadows present, and I love the crushed black look. If any of you have any advice for what goes nicely with crushed blacks, please do tell.
Anyway, I thank you for even making it this far. I'd love to hear from all of you.
EDIT (Probably many of these to come) - I want good lighting, so I was thinking of upping the exposure to get a more contrasty, brighter image. Is that a good idea, to get the bit of contrast in the DVC30 vs. post?
And, if upping the exposure is good, should I keep zebra mode on to identify hot spots?
I'll probably shoot letterbox and then uprez with Photozoom Pro 2? Good idea for a colorfully (purple, red, blue, gold, etc.) lighted, crushed black video, no?
